Acest articol reprezinta un review neprofesional al noului sistem de operare Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Sistemul are platforma Linux dar este destinat atat utilizatorilor desktop sau laptop cat si administratorilor de servere. Eu voi face un review la versiunea Desktop.
This article is a non-professional review of the new operating system Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. This OS has a Linux platform, but it’s designed for desktop and notebook users as well as server administrators. I will review the Desktop version.
Primul lucru care m-a surprins la Ubuntu 9.10 este kitul. Acesta inca nu depaseste dimensiunea de 700 Mb a unui CD obisnuit. In timp ce alte sisteme de operare au kituri ce incap doar pe DVD, si uneori chiar mai mult decat un disc DVD, Ubuntu ramane micut.
The first thing that surprised me at Ubuntu 9.10 is it’s installation kit. The hole OS doesn’t exceed the 700 Mb of a usual CD. While other OS have installation kits that fit only on one or many DVDs, Ubuntu remains small.

Am vrut neaparat sa insir toate componentele care conteaza sau care ar putea avea nevoie de drivere, ca sa va pot povesti despre cum s-a descurcat Karmic Koala cu ele. Sistemul este dupa cum se vede, un pic depasit. Totusi, el nu are probleme nici in rularea Windows 7, fapt care ma face optimist in privinta acestei distributii Linux.
I really wanted to describe the whole configuration and write the components that matter and the components that might need drivers, so that I could tell you later how Karmic Koala managed them. The PC is, as you can see, a little obsolete. But since it is running Windows 7 without any problem, I am optimistic about this Linux distribution.
Intregul proces de instalare a durat mai putin de 30 de minute. Mi s-au cerut cateva setari de baza, iar apoi totul s-a instalat singur. Atentie la partea legata de partitionare! Puteti sterge totul daca nu sunteti atenti ! Dupa instalare, daca aveti o legatura buna la internet, vor mai fi copiate cateva lucruri interesante. Pe langa acestea, puteti alege singuri pachete optionale, gratuite.
The whole process took less than 30 minutes. It requested some basic settings, then all got installed by itself. Be careful at the partitioning part ! You might erase everything if you’re not careful! After the installation, if you have a good internet speed, Ubuntu will copy some other interesting things (like codecs). Besides that, you can choose yourself some optional free packages.
Acum sa-l folosesc un pic! Am sa revin curand cu partea a doua a acestui review.
